Prohormone supplements hold what can only be described as a very unique niche in the bodybuilding market. We’re all very much aware of what anabolic steroids are, and the effects they have upon the body. We know that normal mortals have been transformed into monsters in just a year or two using anabolic steroids. Nobody denies their powers. Rather, most bodybuilders wish they had the courage or connections to purchase actual steroids. However, the roadblocks to purchase are many. Receiving, ordering, and possessing anabolic steroids is a felony and can leave one looking at hefty fines and possible jail time. Any public exposure from this can create a very negative stigma. Family, friends and co-workers will consider you a cheater or worse, a drug user, simply because you choose to boost your body’s natural testosterone production to add some size to your body. You’re not exactly a junkie robbing convenience stores to feed your habit, but they’ll look at you the same way.
On the other end of the spectrum sits a category known as supplements. There are sometimes effective, but certainly considered to be lower octane than anabolic steroids. They can range from quite effective, which is the case of creatine, to extremely ineffective, which is the case of dozens upon dozens of supplements which have come and gone in the last 40 years. For bodybuilders without the ability to use anabolic steroids, starting with supplements is the right way to go. For beginner and intermediate trainers, supplements do deliver a ‘bump’ which makes recovery faster and the results seen in the gym better. But at the advanced level, where many guys are actually endorsing lines of supplements, most guys don’t use them. Ironic, isn’t it?
Finally, we reach the middle-of-the-road category known as prohormone supplements. This category of supplements is relatively new in the bigger scheme of things. There was no need for prohormone supplements back in the 1980s and before, when steroids were legal. And the way legislation is going, it might not be too long before this category is completely eradicated. So what exactly as prohormone supplements? Simply put, they are mild version of oral steroids. They are created so that on the molecular level, they are somewhat different from existing steroids which are illegal. They are just as effective.
Prohormone supplements can be wildly effective when used for very short periods of time. Ideally, they should be used for 6 to 8 weeks at a time, as directed on the label. This fits perfectly for pre-contest athletes looking to ‘grow into’ a show and hold existing muscle while adding a few pounds of beef, as they get lean. Or, to kick of an off-season mass-gaining effort, prohormone supplements can be ideal. There can be problems that arise when prohormone supplements are used for very long periods of time. Some of their side effects can be equal to – or even worse – than those experienced by users of anabolic steroids. Used in moderation, however, they do provide a viable alternative to actual steroid use.
