Have you ever noticed some of the bigger guys in your gym (who presumably are using anabolic steroids) always tend to be nursing some sort of injury? To the lay-person (and those influenced by biased media campaigns), this level of degradation might seem due to the use of AAS. They must make people weaker, right? Some sort of “fake muscle” that steroids deliver must be to blame, right? Not so fast. The muscle you gain with steroids is very real. It is often the speed the muscle is gained (as well as many other factors) that influence injuries. Let’s examine a few of these factors.
New Boundaries
When you train for the first time with anabolic steroids, you make huge strides in terms of strength overnight. With each successive workout, you seem to grow stronger on the major lifts. While it may have taken you 2 or 3 years of training to add that first 50 pounds of weight to your bench press numbers, you’ll likely add that much in 8 weeks time on a cycle. With this jump in weight moved also arrives some ‘growing pains’ which can make for an increase in the likelihood of injury. Your tendons and joints have to become accustomed to moving more weight than they ever have before. The muscles also have to make this adjustment. Injuries and small muscle tears can and will occur.
Overtraining
The propensity for injury increases when the bodybuilder pushes his system further than ever before. And what exactly do steroids do? They allow you to push your system like never before! Once you train past 60 75, 90, or even 120 minutes, you cause damage to your immune system function and leave yourself more vulnerable to both injury and illness – even if you still feel great! Steroids do assist in recovery, but nothing will keep you 100% safe when you’re training 120 minutes per day, 6 days per week. Instead, aim to make your 60 to 75 minute workouts as intense and productive as possible – then get out of the gym so that your body can begin the recovery process!
Impurities
When you go to the store and buy a bottle of Advil, you usually know what to expect. You know what you’re getting when you purchase most items that you use in your daily travels. Anabolic steroids, unless purchased from a pharmacy via a doctor’s prescription, offer no such guarantees. When you buy products from overseas laboratories, you are prone to receiving products of varying quality and composition. This will always be the case as long as the inventory is of the black market variety. Learn the products you use well, and stop use of any products whose results are not normal. Failure to do so can result in drastically changing testosterone levels and impure compounds in your system, which can leave you open to injury or illness.
Solutions
Awareness is probably the most important factor when it comes to avoiding injury as your strength and aggression levels skyrocket and the body is forced to move new weights previously seen as impossible. Of course, you’ll also benefit tremendously from the use of safety devices such as straps and belts when training for new personal bests each time in the gym!
